The First Disarmament and International Security Committee of the UN General Assembly have approved three Russian draft resolutions. All three are associated with exploration of outer space.

Andrey Belousov, Permanent Russian Representative at the UN department in Geneva reported this. He also said what issues these draft resolutions covered. “The first – about not to be the first to deploy armaments in outer space. The second document is – “Further practical measures on prevention of arms race in outer space.” The third draft resolution is about transparency and trust in space,” – he noted. Belousov added that the drafts will be finally approved in early December.

The resolution “On not to be the first on deployment of weapons in outer space” contains an urgent call to the states to express their commitment to political obligations not to be the first to deploy weapons in the space. The draft “Further practical measures on prevention of arms race in outer space” offers to the international community to contribute further efforts to prevent arms race in space.

The authors of the draft resolution “Measures on insuring transparency and strengthening of trust in space activities” urgently recommend the UN member-states to voluntarily consider the measures of transparency and strengthening of trust “in maximum possible and practically achievable manner.”

The USA stood against accepting any of the three draft resolutions. “The United States are trying to impose their own rules and the idea of their own sole domination in space on us, noted Belousov.

The US representative announced that there exist different standpoints with regard to maintaining peace in outer space. According to him, Washington also wants to free the outer space from conflicts.
