It’s been a year after the Resolution was made by the RF Government on 26.12.2011 registered under № 2360-r on the competition for the mineral rights at Elkinsky and Elansky copper and nickel deposits, and the protests of Voronezh and surrounding areas residents against the exploration and development of these fields referred to the subsoil areas of federal significance, have not been dying out. Social movements have been formed – such as "In Defense of Khoper" and "Green Ribbon" – including the unnamed action groups collecting signatures against the "nickel" project.

Oil company BP has arrived at the agreement with U.S. authorities, admitting its guilt for the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and agreed to pay a fine of $ 4.5 billion dollars, including $ 525 million dollars, which the company will pay within three years to the Securities and Exchange Commission, 2.744 billion dollars will be received by U.S. Academy of Sciences and the Environmental Fund, 1.26 billion dollars are the criminal penalties. Agreement on civil suits has not been achieved yet.

Italian seismologists, including the former president of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) Enzo Boshi, a professor of physics at the University of Genoa, Claudio Eva, and one government official, were found guilty of mass murders and misleading the people of the Italian city of Aquila before the earthquake of 2009 and were sentenced to six years' imprisonment each.

34th International Geological Congress (Brisbane, Australia) finished. The Brisbane IGC attracted 6012 delegates from 112 countries – a terrific outcome considering the economic challenges currently facing many nations, and the long distance the majority of delegates had to travel to get to Brisbane.

Prior to the release of the monograph geoethics was defined only by means of the terminology and existed in the form of separate reports and theses. Any general works in this area were missing.

The Resolution of the RF Government from July 17, 2012 # 721 “On amendments to the federal target program “Preservation and rehabilitation of soil fertility of agricultural land and agricultural landscapes as a national patrimony for Russia in 2006-2010 for period up to 2013” was published. The amount of finance for federal target program has been increased from 425715.5376 million rubles to 426715.5276 million rubles.

In  Khasynski district of Magadan region the reconstruction of tailings dam  started. The tailings dam is located on area of Karamkenski gold mining and processing enterprise. That enterprise was closed in 1998. On the 29th of August 2009 after three days of heavy   showers there was tailing dam disintegration and village Karamken was flooded. The dam held a tails and rock refuse containing hazardous substances, including heavy metals. A powerful water stream damaged and destroyed 17 dwelling houses and killed 2 people.

The traditional international section on GEOETHICS was organized in the framework of the 50th Jubilee Mining Pribram Symposium as a regular meeting of the Working Group for Geoethics (operating since 2004 under the umbrella of the Association of Geoscientists for International Development) and convened since 1992 by Dr. Vaclav Nemec (AGID Vice-president for Europe) and by Dr. Lidmila Nemcova (President of the Czech Society for Ethics in Economics).
