From September 6, 2016, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Russian Federation has been receiving complaints (including photos) from Norilsk town (Krasnoyarsk Krai) citizens on contamination of the Daldykan River in Norilsk town area with some unknown nature chemical substance, which gave the water to some bright-red colour. According to preliminary information, failure of the PAO “HMC “Norilsk Nickel” tailings pipeline may be the cause of this contamination.

However, the Over Polar branch of the company denies the information about contamination of the Daldykan River by emergency release from the Nadezhinsky Metallurgical Plant (owned by the Over Polar Branch of “HMC Norilsk Nickel”, but they continue monintoring of the environmental situation around the river.

Currently, the Rosprirodnadzor (Russian Supervision of Natural Resources) commenced checking the fact for the purposes of identification of the contamination causes, assessment of the scope of the damage, caused to the environment for compensation in the established order. The Minister of the Natural Resources S.E. Donskoy instructed the Head of Rosprirodnadzor Artem Sidorov to undertake personal control of the case.
