Drought-stricken Chinese city proposes mega pipeline to pump water from Siberia. The northwest Chinese city of Lanzhou has a serious water shortage problem. To address the issue, its urban planners have sketched out an ambitious plan to deliver water from Siberia’s Lake Baikal to the city along a 1,000-mile-long pipeline. Getting approval for the project will be a monumental challenge, but it may be a sign of things to come for other water-poor regions of the world.

Ratification of Paris Agreement will not threaten economic development of Russia. Alexander Khloponin, Deputy Prime Minister of RF announced this while delivering a speech to the session of “Green” economy as a vector of development” of the Russian Investment Forum in Sochi (Russia).

“To date, we don’t see any risks for social-economic development of the country, and near future we will be proposing to our President to ratify the Agreement, but nobody is limiting us in time”, - he said.

Tromsö, Norway 27 February 2017 - Activists from Greenpeace Nordic and Greenpeace Germany are today protesting at a Statoil oil rig in a fjord in northern Norway. The activists - in kayaks near the rig - are peacefully protesting against Statoil and the Norwegian government for opening up a new oil frontier in the Arctic. The rig Songa Enabler is planned to drill further north in the Norwegian Arctic than ever before.

Drained swamps will be restored in Nizhny Novgorod oblast of Russia. This decision was taken by participants of the meeting at the Kerzhensky National Park on rehabilitation of hydrological regime of drained swamps in Nizhny Novgorod oblast. Fulfilment of the decisions taken will be possible within implementation of the Russian-German pilot project “Rehabilitation of peatland swamps in Russia for the purposes of prevention of fires and mitigation of climate change.

China's installed photovoltaic (PV) capacity more than doubled last year, turning the country into the world's biggest producer of solar energy by capacity, the National Energy Administration (NEA) said on Saturday.

Installed PV capacity rose to 77.42 gigawatts at the end of 2016, with the addition of 34.54 gigawatts over the course of the year, data from the energy agency showed.

Russian scholars propose commencing to mine “space electricity” by building a space solar power station. According to the scientists, such power generation method would be cheaper than mining hydrocarbon fuel. This proposal is contained in the report of the representatives of the Central Scientific Research Institute of Machinery, the leading scientific Institute of Roscosmos, Moscow Institute of Aviation and Scientific-Production Union named after Lavochkin. This report is to be presented at the Academic Readings Event about Cosmonautics.

Some gradual improvement of hydro-economic situation at the Baikal Lake in Quarter I of 2017. Alexander Frolov, Head of Federal Agency of Hydrometeorology and Monitoring of the environment of the Russian Federation (Rosgidromet) told this to the public. Partly, according to him, it is expected that minimum level of the lake in 2017 will be 11-15 cm lower than in 2016, while the water level run for January-April 2017 will be close to the levels, observed during the same period in 2015.

Last year was the hottest year on record globally, beating 2015’s exceptionally high temperatures, the World Meteorological Organisation said today.

The global average temperature in 2016 was 1.1°C higher than pre-industrial levels and about 0.07°C higher than the previous record set in 2015, the organisation said.
