From September 6, 2016, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Russian Federation has been receiving complaints (including photos) from Norilsk town (Krasnoyarsk Krai) citizens on contamination of the Daldykan River in Norilsk town area with some unknown nature chemical substance, which gave the water to some bright-red colour. According to preliminary information, failure of the PAO “HMC “Norilsk Nickel” tailings pipeline may be the cause of this contamination.

magnitude 6.2 earthquake has struck central Italy, leaving at least six people dead and others trapped under rubble, Italian officials said. The quake hit at 03:36 (01:36 GMT), 76 km (47 miles) southeast of the city of Perugia, at the very shallow depth of 10km (six miles), the USGS said.

NASA announces aerospace partners for its deep space habitats. Surviving in the wilderness of space takes more than a sleeping bag and a packet of wet wipes, and so to explore how humanity can stay alive in the cold dark beyond, NASA is canvassing designs for new deep space habitats. The agency's Next Space Technologies for Exploration Partnerships (NextSTEP) program ask private companies to build ground-based prototypes of various modules, meeting a number of criteria from basic life support to fire safety tech and radiation mitigation.

The world celebrates the anniversary of the discovery  of the Valley of Geysers (Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia). Seventy-five years ago, people learned about the existence of the main Kamchatka nature miracle. The cluster of geysers, fumaroles and hot springs in this valley were only discovered by a local scientist of the Kronotsky reserve, Tatyana Ustinova and her guide Anisifor Krupenin in 1941. She published her findings fourteen years later, but there was little exploration of the area until 1972.

The US Air Force is working on plans to improve radio communication over long distances by detonating plasma bombs in the upper atmosphere using a fleet of micro satellites.

Since the early days of radio, we’ve known that reception is sometimes better at night. Radio stations that cannot be picked up by day may be heard clearly at night, transmitting from hundreds of kilometres away.
